Unreadable by modern standards. The sentences ran so long that I forgot what they were about in the first place.

I enjoyed these stories more a second time. Definitely have to be in the mood for these.

The ambiguity of it all made the imagination come up with its own little horrors and I appreciated the creeping dread that slowly encroached as I read along.
James’s use of the two young children played upon a subtle but prevailing fear that children and childhood belong to some world that adults have left behind and are unable to get back - this can cause some consternation, and when used appropriately as has been done here - no small amount of fear and disquiet.
The ending did shock me a little because I wasn’t expecting it but I think it intensified the horror - both at the prospect that the narrator has to explain her situation and the events leading up to death to a presumably incredulous audience, but also at the prospect that with his death her own delusions (?) might be exposed…

This is a gothic classic that is timeless and will go down in history. It has a spooky but not scary atmosphere.
