This book is a modern retelling of Anne of Green Gables. This story follows Anne as she is pursuing her Master’s degree in New York. She is still the spunky, fact-loving, smart and vivacious Anne I remember from my youth.

This story had more of a Romance vibe as she and her high school nemesis Gilbert reunite. There is angst, doubt, suspicion, heartbreak, tension and love.

“It felt like they were on the precipice of something important. Something they couldn’t come back from. That moment before a trust fall, the point of suspended time spooling out as they teetered on the edge of the plunge into the unexplored territory."

I loved hearing from both Anne and Gilbert’s voices. The story is ultimately about vulnerability, trust, support and acceptance. It was a fun and entertaining story that had my eyes leaking more than once. I really enjoyed it.

Giving this two stars because I did finish it but... I understand that the author responded to a twitter request for an Anne update, and this is what she did. It's actually three books in one (Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea and Anne of the Island) moved from PEI to the Hamptons/Manhattan, and Green Gables is now a winery. Clearly there was a checklist of Things To Mention, like the infamous carrots incident or Diana meeting Fred or Rachel Lynde moving in with Marilla. Yet other things, like the equally infamous Ophelia boatride or Matthew and the brown dress, are left out. To be honest, I'm not against updating books, but I do expect something with a little more thought. This feels dashed off, rather than really trying to update the source material.

I'm not a romance fan, and this was really just Anne/Gilbert fanfic. But I love the AoGG world and enjoyed the updated characters, especially the delight of the Mrs. Lynde reveal and the subtlety of Roy Gardner. Still, my favorite parts were from Anne's childhood, updated to the 90s at a Hamptons winery. I'd read THAT book in a heartbeat.

Did they even like each other?? Half of the book was wasted on flashbacks that didn’t advance the plot or tell us anything that couldn’t have been a brief memory shared in a conversation where Anne and Gilbert were getting to know each other. Instead we get to almost the end and you hardly even know that they like each other bc they’ve barely spoken to each other. They are practically living at each others apartments but there is no romance.

I love Anne and Gilbert. There is a special place in my heart for them and I had really high hopes for this. However, it was so bad, I barely finished it.

Also slight spoiler, Anne gets in professional trouble and the resolution is pretty much Gil saves the day which is stupid and archaic.

I am a huge Anne of the Green Gables fan (the book and the TV shows) and I was so excited to read a modern retelling of a story I love so much.

This is an Adult modern re-telling of Anne of Green Gables and it was such a fun and easy read. I loved re-discovering Anne, Gilbert, Diana, Marilla and Matthew, but with a modern twist. This story follows Anne on her last year of grad school in New York City where she randomly runs into Gilbert after 6 years of silence. The story is written in dual-POVs and switches between "then" and "now" timelines.

I have to say, their romantic build up was just as fun to read in a modern world, but I enjoyed the build up more than the actual relationship between Anne and Gilbert. The tension and banter between them was excellent, but once they started their romance, the love fell a little flat for me. I think the author banked on readers already connecting with Anne and Gilbert's relationship from the original story. So, while I enjoyed this "modern AU fan-fiction" of one of my favorite ships, the romance might not connect with those not already familiar with Anne of Green Gables.

This book also featured one of my least favorite tropes: someone gets hurt out of the blue and needs surgery/goes to the hospital. While I am a BIG fan of the hurt/comfort trope, I like it when it adds to overall arc of the story, not to just further miscommunication and create unneeded angst (which this book did).

Overall, this was a solid, cute read! I read it in one day, and it was just the fluffy book the doctor ordered.

Thank you, William Morrow and Custom House and NetGalley, for providing me with this ARC (Advanced Reader's Copy) in exchange for an honest review.
