I really love this kind of horror. I had a lot of fun reading this; the humour was pretty funny, it had a few really scary moments and the ending was surprisingly sweet. It felt a little too short, I wanted to know way more about the strange main character (what the hell was she even doing on the dating show to begin with??). The second half is where it becomes a slasher but I also felt that went by far too quickly, as if it was trying to get the characters out of the way rather than giving time to breathe within kills. A lot of questions, especially about the members of the island group, went unanswered in a way that didn't satisfy me. Would recommend this though, if not just for a quick, weird and funny queer read about. Found family? And sasquatches.

I love the idea of this book but it was a little all over the place.

This is an entertaining, fast read. It's full of weird humor and shallow characters, poking fun at cultural narcissism in an over-the-top, hilarious way. And when the horror kicks in, hold on, because it gets gruesome and absolutely bonkers for the last 100 pages! This book is silly in all the best ways, and was a lot of fun to read.

The final four female contestants in a “reality” show vie for the attentions of “the catch,” a smarmy tech millionaire working to rehab his image, while the show’s producer tries to make it through each day despite her alcoholic boss and emotional baggage. Meanwhile, lady Bigfoot and a few of her queer women friends just want everyone to leave them alone on their peaceful island. Most of the characters do not end up getting what they want, but as with any good horror flick, I was cheering for the final girl.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book. While it never felt like the story was dragging the long build up to the action made me want to spend a little more time on the ending. It’s a great book to start spooky season with and will definitely appeal to hate watchers of reality television. I just wish I’d gotten to learn more about Patricia.

This book is really bizarre in a great way! It gets grisly, and the ending is unsettling, but it's a fascinating deep dive into the psychology of reality TV, internalized misogyny, the wild woman archetype, the true place of humans in our ecosystems, the morality of sacrificial violence, and more. Strong recommend, if you can handle some body horror and gore.
