This is the second book by Kacen Callendar that I have read and both times I have been disappointed. I think my main issue is the writing style and that, that is just not for me but I have one more book from them on my shelf so I am going to give it one last chance.

Other problems that I had with this book was the plot and the pacing of it. I didn't really feel it had a plot at all or at least I didn't get it and the pacing just felt a little off to me.
Another thing that bothered me was the fact that the main character kept saying that she was all alone in this world when she had a perfectly nice father sitting right in front of her never doing anything inherently wrong. that just didn't really sit right with me.

nothing was developed enough to make sense. it wasn't very charming. was nice learning about the virgin islands. i also don't really like reading children's books, so it wasn't for me.

I don't really know what to say about this book. It has serious flaws yet genuine and sincere moments. Upper Middle Grades

4.5 stars. I’m going to cry I wish I had been able to read this book when I was younger. My only complaint is that I wish the magical realism element had been expanded upon, because it was a little confusing.

Caroline is born during a hurricane, which makes her unlucky and able to see past the supernatural veil. She rejects this notion and fights to be treated fairly. Even though, her mother has abandoned her and her father. Caroline is determined to find her mom and fix what is broken in her life. When a new girl comes to school, Caroline is desperate to be her friend and finds that she has deeper feelings for the girl. Together they work to find her mother.

This book was unique. It was an interesting plot that will appeal to a select group of readers. I appreciate the LGBTQ layer.

This book was written beautifully. It is about a young girl living in the Virgin Islands on a quest to find her mother. Along the way she discovers self love and makes a friend. I enjoyed the main character being a strong young woman trying to hide her vulnerabilities. I also enjoyed the setting.
