I picked this comic up, because it was recommended and I love the original TV mini-series. This is definitely a starter issue and it doesn't have much depth. It isn't as intriguing as the mini-series.
The art is beautiful and well done, and as a fan you're just happy to see more of the series! It's just not as action-packed or as captivating as the original TV series. Hopefully, it only gets better from here!
There are 2 mini-stories within this first issue. One with Greg which is cute and another melancholy introduction into the life of the Woodsman's daughter, Anna.

“Schooltown Follies” was my favorite episode of the series, so I was delighted with the second half of this volume, but I can understand why others were disappointed.

This lost a star on a second reading because I’m tired of thoughtless tropes with regard to POC characters and them turning into animals. And a reference to someone’s deceased POC sister perhaps being likened to a monkey. I don’t think these were meant maliciously, but I almost wish I had been an editor or consultant in the room who could advise that it might come across as racist to put in these allusions to inhumanity. I think that it was ignorance and attempting to keep the whimsical nature of the story consistent throughout, but geeze. Sometimes writers just really wade right into it with the tropes.

A good first instalment to the series, even if I did feel a little lost.
The illustrations are beautiful and the two storylines are very intriguing.

I'll blame the rating on me not having watched the TV series, and having absolutely zero clue what was going on and why there was two completely different stories being told in this comic.

The first part with the boys was fine, but not as good as the TV shows. The second, longer part with girl's soliloquy is so boring I just had to drop it.

I was introduced to this universe via this book (so I found out later that I came in at the end of the primary journey, but my review is solely based on this book).
It's a great children's book, with some notes for adults. It felt like a journey through a child's wild and positive imagination. No time for politics, or mortgages, or car-notes, or other daily adult-life woes. It was refreshing and whimsical, and that was very much appreciated.
It was a quick little tale about a boy traveling to a fantastical world where birds talk and frogs can be deputies. A world where pre-teen older brothers and their crushes can be left behind for just fun travels with friends and imaginary creatures.
I liked the story, which led me to find more stories and shows.
