Really mixed feelings on this one. From one perspective this is the perfect pre/early teen boys adventure story with frontier life, wilderness survival, interacting with other cultures, and figuring out the appropriate way to deal with oppressive governments, all wrapped up in a fun sci-fi package. (And bonus points for the teen boy main characters having a super important role to play while at the same time adults actually realistically have to handle adult things, and parents are trustworthy.)  On the other hand, large parts of the book just drag for no apparent reason even when they *should* be interesting, and not just as an adult, because I remember not enjoying this one as much as other Heinlein books in my teens either.

I probably won't re-read this one again myself unless I just get in a super specific mood, but I would definitely hand it to a teen adventure lover who's in need of reading material, just to see if it sticks.

Important side note: The version I read undid some editorial changes for the original edition, which re-introduced a bit of unnecessary gender weirdness around the Martians. If you're not sure which version you have you might want to preview before handing it to younger readers.
