A tragic, horrendously beautiful novel.

"What threw him was the way that his brother-in-law seemed to consider it perfectly natural to discard his wife as though she were a broken watch or household appliance".

"They hung up without any unnecessary small talk. That was the kind of relationship they had these days - that of business partners, who were careful to excise any superfluity from their dealings, and whoe only shared business wa their child".

"Had she ever really understood her husband's true nature, bound up as it was with that seemingly impenetrable silence?".

"Why, is it such a bad thing to die?".

"Even as a child, as far back as she could remember, she had done nothing but endure".

"The pain feels like a hole swallowing her up, a source of intense fear and yet, at the same time, a strange, quiet peace".

"Even after certain things have happened to them, no matter how awful the experience people still go on eating and drinking, going to the toilet and washing themselves - living, in other words".

This book is very weird and disconcerting, I think I expected it to be weirder and was thus somewhat let down.

Part 1 and Part 3 were amazing, with Part 3 actually being my favorite—I love a complicated, tragic, compelling sibling relationship! Part 2 I largely did not enjoy.
