This was a very interesting and imaginative concept overall! The world building was very well done. With such a unique art style and cast of characters I was intrigued from page one and I am very curious to find out how the story continues. It was very refreshing to see such a diverse cast of characters and different types of people represented (Eyang is definitely a favorite!). Volume 1 sets the story up very nicely and it will be interesting to see how the plot interweaves with the various characters.
Moderate: Bullying, Death of parent, and Fire/Fire injury

This was a solid start to a graphic novel series. The art was decent, the colour palette definitely being the best bit with lots of muted greens and purples. The magic system was cool, linking hair length to magic strength with a glimpse into some finer details. I'm hoping we'll see more development of this in future instalments. Overall, it was the political intrigue that really hooked me. I was left with questions, but in a good way!
Nyneve was a really interesting MC and her arc posed a lot of questions like, what do we owe the world if it has hurt us so much? What do we owe our fellow citizens? How can you love and trust others when historically that's led to lots of hurt? Nyneve doesn't have any answers to these questions so we are stumbling along beside her as the reader, trying to figure things out. The other characters were great too. They all felt individual and dynamic. I love how fleshed out Nyneve's mum was, and the potential of Prill's character.
The gripe I had with this story was that it felt very much like a set-up book for the rest of the series, as beyond the first half of the book it lacked good structure.

Is what happened to the royal family the truth? How are Jung and Nyneve's mum connected? I'm also interested to see where the rebellion goes, and to understand how the current political and magic system is damaging the spirit world.Nyneve was a really interesting MC and her arc posed a lot of questions like, what do we owe the world if it has hurt us so much? Queer Asian witches, whose power is determined by the length of their hair set in a semi-tropical high fantasy backdrop? Sign me up.
The art is gorgeous and the way Kindle now has an option to move through comics frame by frame really gives it a cinematic feel. While cute and sometimes whimsical, heavy topics are also addressed from the jump (TW: there is the death of a parent in the opening).
I suspect that this is going to be a slow burn, rivals-to-lovers with the trans character, Prill, but I'm not too sure. Not enough evidence yet, but they have an interesting start.
This was a fast but fun read and I'm excited to read Volume II!
