This was weird and intriguing and just so so so good. Made me think about grief differently. Not as creepy or scary as I thought it would be. A huge mystery, a little supernatural, a tiny romance. Good stuff.

I did win this in a Goodreads giveaway, but I don't remember when.

I enjoyed this, it was a fast paced and sometimes very creepy story.

I wanted to like this book, I was even willing to read it and scare myself. I had seen many reviews comparing the creepy creatures to that girl from The Ring. But the scares never really came. The questions did though. I finished the book and am still pretty confused about a ton of things that happened.

Sophie was bland. Evan had nothing interesting to offer at all. The way they came together seemed random and forced, and their relationship awkward. The rest of the characters weren't interesting at all, either.

So, why didn't I DNF this book? The concept of the Takers was intriguing, but the execution was horrific. I didn't really get what they were or why they existed. The middle third of the book is weighed down by lengthy exposition, blog posts written by a supporting character that don't really tell the reader anything. I wanted to try to get some answers to the many, many questions that I'd formed, but I didn't get them by the end of the book.

I'm not sure what, if anything, could have improved The Murmurings. To me, it was kind of a half-developed story. I'll never understand the world of publishing and how books like this get big publishers, while amazing indie stories do not.

I really enjoyed this book... I didn't want it to end.. It became a part of me. Sophie became a friend, who I was helping to solve the mysteries of the murmuring and Nell...

There were parts that were good, very good. Unfortunately, those were too few and far between.

The author has a real talent at creating and sustaining a eerie scene and atmosphere. These are the strongest parts.

Where the book did not hold up for me was in the clunky and inorganic way the rules and parameters of the world were shared. Once, maybe twice, this kind of information was dropped on the reader Data Dump style with a several pages of "Because of this... Then this... Therefore that...." At other times a new rule or wrinkle was dropped at the exact plot point a dead-end-averting new rule or wrinkle would be particularly useful.

The classic flaw of any horror movie, of course, is: Going into the basement when you are being chased. Why? Almost as stupid as sex-starved teenagers going camping, but THAT one is understandable.

This book contains a few of those moments -- the basement, not the camping, kind. I don't want to spoil this for any who might read this, but our heroine does at least one really head slapping move that produces in predictably bad results. Predictably really bad results.

You could almost hear the plot session: "Well, I need THIS to happen, so therefore I need THAT to happen, and THIS needs to happen AFTER that even though that makes little sense but...."

So, final verdict? A talented author, with an intriguing idea, that does not realize its full potential because some mechanics get in the way and spoil the ride.

3.5 kept me on the edge of my seat. I was dying to know more about the murmurs, Adam, Nell and the residents of oakside.

This book was very slow, very boring, very uninteresting. I don't recommend.

Only my sheer stubbornness allowed me to finish this book. Everything was just, ugh.

Full review to come!
