This one is such fun. Reading the second one aloud now. Mac B is funny and smart and the kids are totally finding ways to bring the random history tidbits they learned from this book into real life. And they loved it, and the drawings were simple but fun. How come Wimpy Kid isn't more like this? I'd be willing to read those.

I’m trying to coax my 7yo into reading chapter books on his own, so I’ve been reading him books that I think he could get through without me. This book has a few good chuckles. It’s written in chapter form, but with pictures of some sort on every page. Some of the humor required explanation for him. All in all, a good book for a 7-9yo but it didn’t really capture my heart.

A young spy boy back in the 1980s is contacted by the queen to solve a case of the missing spoon. I found the story an interesting idea. The characters are well created and each become their own entity in the story. It was a cute early mystery, detective book.

Mac B. Kid Spy: Mac Undercover by Mac Barnett was a book I didn't expect to love as much as I did. It's the (allegedly) true story of how the author was a spy as a kid that I received as an advanced copy. Mac receives notice from the Queen of England that she needs his help. Something has been stolen, and it's on Mac to help her find it. I think part of the reason I loved this one is that it takes place in the late 80s. It's talking about my childhood times for kid's today. The other really cool dimension (at least for a nerd like me) is that there are lots of subtle nudges for kids to explore the facts/history in the book. Because the book is so fun and laidback, you don't even realize all the stuff you're learning. Again, I didn't expect to love this one as much as I did. However, the solid illustrations and the humor throughout made this one a gem of a read even for someone outside the target demographic.

Uhm, I am just not sure what I thought about this book. On the one hand I liked it, spies, gameboys, travelling the world, corgis, but on the other hand it was just weird and I got a bit tired off the constant reminding that this was taking place at x and y time or that this was a real story etc. etc. We get it. Mac was a pretty interesting character though, and I liked that he apparently didn't question much just went for the spy life as if it was the thing he was doing all the time (even if this was, for me at least, his first mission). I had a few snickers here and there. But the biggest thing that kept me reading? The illustrations. They were just fantastic. <3

I received an ARC of this from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Mac gets a call from the demanding Queen of England, whose crown jewels have been stole. Mac is the only one who can solve the mystery and return the valuables. She flies him to England and he starts uncovering the secrets with the help of the Queen's corgis. The French Prime Minister is super suspicious and it will take only the best spy to figure out how he fits into the plot.

This book is super weird, yet super funny. I can think of many guy readers who would be rolling on the floor laughing at this book. It has the potential to become popular with the kids who have read all of the Captain Underpants books.

Kind of silly, but in a fun, childlike way. I could definitely see younger readers enjoying this.
