This is the second best book of the Rangers apprentice series. The story about Erak is insanely sophisticated and well written. Everything falls in place, is for a purpose. Extremely fullfilling

3.5 stars.
I love pretty much everyone, although I thought the Tualaghi too one-note and one of the villains too chaotic evil with not much dimension to his character. Also, a thing I've noticed since the previous book is the obsession of a few characters with coffee. The way they consume it voraciously without much thought made me think about how they manage to possess huge amounts of it. I mean it's safe to guess that this would be around the middle ages if it wre set in our world, so there's no mass production yet. It's just hard to process that even a reclusive man like the "sorcerer" in the previous book can have so much coffee in hand. But this I aimed primarily at older children, so I guess kids aren't gonna lose sleep thinking about small things like that.

at the end when Evanlyn says she, like everyone else, really wants Halt's approval and I feel like I am right there along with them in that . . . like, can Halt just adopt me already?

I enjoyed this a lot. Chronologically, this book comes before book 5.
