The cliffhanger. The twists. Wtf, I would have never in a million years guessed that ending.
Completely mind blown

I'm feeling very conflicted about this book. On one hand, it's an interesting idea and I like that there are elemental powers involved and some plot twists I didn't see coming. On the other hand, the last plot twist made like no sense, because it completely contradicts what the protagonist had been saying in her mind the whole story. Also, her reaction to things should have been completely different if we, as an audience, are to believe what happens at the end.
I did see elements of both Sarah J Maas and Maria Snyder which I liked but the protagonist needed a bit more... Something. To make the story more interesting and less redundant.
I was going to give it a 4, but I think I gotta bump it down to 3.5.

I quite literally threw my phone when i read the note she wrote to her family. I am DONE.
SPOILER
why are they over complicated things, though. Like just marry Jaren then she’d get her throne as well as Jaren

What I really do not like :
I have conflicted feelings about the fmc bcs she's so nice and selfless and sometimes I can't understand why she is willing to sacrifice her life for someone they just met. But at first, but I don't want to judge a book just because the fmc doesn't fit my criteria of the protagonist that I will root for. So I continue the series. I've been trying to project my mind that she's a doctor and she's trying to be a good doctor by volunteering for a deadly trials for her badly injured patient that she just met bcs it eventually will help her to escape the prison too. I'm trying to understand her situation and I'm also trying to understand her decision making but I find it is so hard because for someone who live in a deadly prison, she is so naive and I do not think it is a good thing to have it when you're living in a deadly prison. She keeps getting helps from other people to survive the trial, well okay- okay- cool. That's fine. She's just not the type of the main character that I wil root for.
But then.... the plot twist at the end of the chapter changes everything. It changes everything about her for me. She's probably going to be the fmc that I will root for.
Let's go to
the things I like :
First, the World Building on this book is explained well through out the story and it also has hints of political intrique that probably I will enjoy. Eventhough it doesn't give me a solid view of the world outside the prison because on this book 100% the place setting is on the prison but it is enough to make us understand the situation that our characters are going through.
Second, I love the side characters more than the main characters. Jaren, I see you boy. I see you. Aaaargh, I am so excited for the next book.

So, I'm writing this after reading the entire series and of the series I would say this is my second favorite of the three books. I feel like there are parts that do drag on but in all it was a decent read.
There were definitely parts that annoyed me, especially the ending of this book. I won't say what that is and it wasn't enough for me to stop reading the book but it just annoyed me in some way. Though it did make me want to keep reading at the same time just so I could find out what happened so I guess in a way it did something right.
The characters are great, they're well fleshed and I enjoy the banter between them all.
3.5 stars though I'll round up
