And Then You’re Dead turned out to be the unexpected cure to my 2020 reading drought. If you’re like so many other readers during the pandemic, you might have found yourself unable to focus while reading for any number of reasons. However, ATYD’s humor made me laugh at times when I didn’t think I could this year and it’s short chapters, each filled with a different macabre death scenario, were just what I needed to re-engage my brain. For instance, did you know, you’ll do more damage to a passerby by throwing a ball point pen from the Empire State Building than a penny? This hilarious pop science title will be great for fans of Mary Roach as well as fans of the show 1001 Ways to Die!

It's a great premise for a book, but I just didn't find it as interesting as I expected. I think "What If?" by Randall Munroe is a much better example of this kind of humorous science read.

The introduction mentions that this book is "Stephen Hawking meets Stephen King" and that's pretty much it. This book is very interesting, witty and, yes, morbid and gruesome. Some of it drones on a bit but I found it entertaining and learned some fun facts to impress people at parties :)
