Lovely short story/novella that sheds light on a couple mysteries from the Sevenwaters series.

This was fine, but very forgettable. I read it after starting Flame of Sevenwaters hoping to get an explanation of why Eilis was gone, but the novella doesn’t explain that. Conri feels unnecessarily shoehorned into the series, and ultimately the series doesn’t really feel like it gains anything from learning about what’s happened to Conri or Padriac. Aisha is an intriguing character and a rare character of color in the series, but she’s vastly underused here and you learn very little about her other than that she respects people by default and is game for an adventure. Conri is extremely bland and a good reminder that you almost never want to hear the inner monologue of a man in a romance novel. And you get very little detail about Eilis or Padriac and his family, just enough on the latter to make Padriac feel like he’s run away from Sevenwaters as a solution to being unable to face his memories, which is a stark and sad comparison to Maeve’s story in the next book.

I’m aware from the afterword that Marillier meant this novella to be a reassuring story about hope in the middle of her own cancer struggles, but ultimately it felt like too much unfulfilling detail on things best left to the imagination.

i loved this. Found it years after finishing the series, and it was just a delightful step back into the Sevenwaters world.

I love Juliet Marillier, so this 2.5 rating really hurts me. Unfortunately this novella is just too short. There was not enough time to get to know the characters and get into the story. I strongly recommend the rest of the Sevenwater series, if you're into historical fantasy though.

I love the first 3 Sevenwaters novels. It was originally a trilogy and then Juliet Marillier added 3 more books and this novella. At this point, it was goal of mine to finish the Sevenwaters series and I almost forgot about this one. I did enjoy it but think it would have been better as a full book. Good for fans of the series but not a necessary read! [Sadly, I ended up DNF'ing the 6th book... *sigh*]
