I might come back to this, it just felt like it didn't have much heart.

I absolutely love this book & series. This is an classically, epic story with characters that are so flawed & perfect that you can't help but identify with at least one of them. This story about a very unlikely group of adventurers (one half doesn't trust the other half) that are chosen to go & save the world. This is a great entry point for any reader that wants to get into the fantasy genre. The characters are very deep & rich in their descriptions & personalities. I've read this book & its following 2 books so many times & feel like catching up with old friends.

I don't mind a large cast...but having the sense to know which characters to develop is why good authors get the big bucks.

I'm hoping they didn't get too much for this one.

I read this when I was a kid, and just re-read again. this is a really fast read, good characters and interesting plot. I think it's written as a young adult sci fi/fantasy novel, because the writing is a bit juvenile and there are some "adult" situations that are hinted at and glossed over, but it's still a good read. Lots of politics and interactions that don't lose anything with the passage of time.
