Drags and drags and drags through a serious case of too many main characters and info-dumping—a two star book except for the last 50 or so pages, which redeem it. A lack of female characters made it hard to engage (though I have to concede it’s still great for its time in this regard, sadly) and the extreme emphasis on fantasy ‘race’ honestly squicks me out as in most books in this genre. (When you read a book about humans, they don’t all address each other or get described by the narrator as “human” or worse yet, a racial designation, every few sentences.) This is a big symptom of its DnD affiliation, as is an overemphasis on combat scenes and odd jumps over moments of what could be interpersonal and social interaction that might actually flesh out and develop character interiority. At one point a character literally says “Well, it’s good we have a cleric now,” a totally nonsensical thought for any actual social encounter not dependent on a world of game mechanics.
However, I would say it’s worth a read for any fantasy reader to see how much influence from this underlies many other books you have read. As the reviews evidence, it was dramatically impactful and provoked serious allegiance in most fantasy readers reading from the pre-1995 selection.

I thought the first 1/2 to 2/3 of the book was slow but it really picked up in the final part. It’s a high fantasy worth reading if you enjoy companions n adventures stories.
Graphic: Death, Suicidal thoughts, and War
Minor: Sexual assault
