it was pretty good up until the final "fight scene"

“I have a heart for every year I’ve been alive”

“Technically I’m a murderer but I like to think that it’s one of my better traits”

“I died once and I haven’t been able to do it again since”

used left and right instead of port and starboard. eww.

Spoiler the characters made very a sudden switch from hating each other to only caring about each other.
If the saad has 400 crew members why do we only ever meet and speak to 4 of them??
the characters POVs sound very similar in some chapters

constant switching between 1st and 3rd person povs
the sirens lept onto land like cats????? how is that supposed to work?????

overall pretty good. might read again

Now this is a retelling done right!

The plot was amazing and just perfect - not too simplistic, not over complicated. It was captivating and enthralling from start to finish.
This book was much darker than expected which I fucking loved because when I discovered that it was a retelling of the Little Mermaid, I was afraid it was gonna be too Disney if you know what I mean.
The world-building was perfect too, it was an easy world to get into with a slow paced world-building with vivid imagery but action packed and fast in terms of plot and storyline.
I loved Elian and Lira equally - they were all around amazing and super fun to read about! AND NO INSTA LOVE. THANK GOD HALLELUJAH. I want to thank Christo with all my heart for NOT shoving ridiculous loathsome insta-love in our faces and instead giving us two wonderfully dynamic characters with their own character developments that emerged from within themselves and their journey and not dependent on each other like disgusting lovesick puppies. And can I get an amen for the banter between Elian and Lira - it never failed to make me laugh.
The supporting characters were fairly interesting, and the Sea Queen as a villain was also fairly villain-y although she didn't exactly give me chills or anything - tbh Lira was more scary to me. Lira could punch me in the face and I would thank her.

All in all, this was book was fucking awesome, a great read and I'm so glad I picked it up. Definitely one of my favorite reads this year so far!

I would give this book a 4.5 if I could because I did feel that Lira's and Elian's romance was a little rushed toward the end.

But I couldn't help it. I spend the entire morning finishing this book and I can say I was only bored with it for two chapters which is more than I thought. When I found out, after I bought it, that it was a Little Mermaid retelling, I was unsure of it. I'm not a very big fan of the Little Mermaid.

But this I liked it. The dark fantasy of it. The humor. The moment where she sacrifices herself to save Elian from a bullet!

I loved this. It out a whole spin on Little Mermaid and I'm glad I read this book.
