Awful, so awful. The writing is horrendous and I couldn't get interested in any of the characters. I'll never understand why the characters kept "reading the minds" of other characters. How did Colin know what Chloe was thinking? He didn't, it was just a tool the writer used unconvincingly. No sane person would think or talk the characters in this book.

I almost didn't finish the book but wanted to read the twist ending. I was also disappointed by the twist, it was obvious and lame.

This book is not the next Gone Girl and I wouldn't recommend this book to my worst enemy.

Predictable until...

I was going to give it 3 stars because of the way it is written with the changing perspectives and the past and future...but then the ending was a nice twist and deserved 4 stars. I just feel this story was missing something and it took me a while to get through because I lost interest. The movie, when they make it, will hopefully be a little better and more fluid.

Although I do not think that this book is the best one of Kubica’s books, it was still really good. It kept me engaged and wanting to know more about what happened to Mia.  It was a nice, easy read and I really liked how she writes using the dual timelines of “then” and “now” all the characters in the book. I would definitely recommend the book to others in the future.

I'm being a bit generous with my rating because I did find the story entertaining and had trouble putting the book down. So for that I'll round up to an even 4 stars. I thought it was an interesting concept reading about a missing girl through the POVS of not only her captor but her mom and detective as well. I will say that some of the chapters in Eve and Gabe's POV were a bit dragged on and almost seemed unnecessary.
I liked the side story between Eve and Gabe but I wish we had gotten more closure in their relationship.
I think Colin was the most captivating character and the most in depth.
He had a significant backstory and it was really engaging to see his narration and how it went from hostile to endearing, and the way his view of Mia changed.
I wish we got to read more from his perspective. I wouldn't compare it to a book like Gone Girl. If anything it could have possibly been marketed as a dark romance if it had been told through Colin and Mia's POVS more.

My disappointment really pertained to the ending and how we finally get a epilogue POV from Mia who is the girl we have been reading about this whole time through the eyes of the people around her, only to be left disappointed with the way she describes POC in a dehumanizing way as well as the fact that she had played a role in her own abduction (that ultimately got my boy Colin💀🪦) I spent the whole time worrying about and empathizing with this young girl (like myself) just to find out... oh... she kind of sucks.

Back to the topic of POC I noticed a theme of the way POC are mentioned in the book, how they're related to being "unsafe" when mentioning POC populated neighborhoods as well as how they're described. It's unsettling and made me disappointed with the characters. I understand it's being told through the eyes of other people and how they describe and view things as an individual, but I felt like every character had described POC in a way that made me audibly go "eugh". I got the feeling that maybe the author herself is disconnected or had a personal bias concerning POC.

The ending completely took me by surprise! I love the alternating viewpoints.
