I’m not sure I liked the end; I’ll have to think about it for a while.

Note: This is the 3rd and final book in the Broken Earth trilogy so this will not be an in-depth review.

Last weekend, I decided to take a break from reading new releases as I had finished the stack I had and was waiting for another stack to become available so I decided to pick up The Stone Sky by N.K. Jemisin, the 3rd and final book in the Broken Earth trilogy, as I was really excited to finish the trilogy and it also had a hold on it so I couldn’t renew it.

The best thing about this book and series in general is the themes that it explored. This is an African-based fantasy written by an own voices author so we have the normal themes that would go along with that, but as I have already covered those in the reviews for the previous books, I wanted to cover more universal, particularly ones that came up in this installment.

For instance, there is a prevalence leaning towards the fallacy of humanity on a thematic level. The Stillness is a world torn apart by out-of-control plate tectonics and every day is an absolute struggle to survive, especially during one of the times of increased activity. With this in mind, you would think that these individuals would be more interested in their history as it may help them to survive and learn from past mistakes, but of course, as is typical of humanity in my experience, they choose to ignore it and in some cases even prevented it from coming to life. As an inspiring anthropologist who makes learning from the past her business, the fact that this theme is so prevalent is frustrating, but it also makes for exciting reading.

Another theme that is prevalent is the complexities of family whether it be concerning relationships, conflict, or growing up. There are multiple instances in every storyline within this book that show what it means to be family in all of its heights and pitfalls. If you read the author’s note of this book, then you know why there is so much emphasis on family and parenthood, and I love that she was able to funnel her feelings in such an amazing way.

All in all, if this trilogy sounds interesting to you, then you should totally pick it up. 5 stars and a new all-time favorite!!!!!!
