What if you combine: the half-assed imagery of Veronica Roth; the bare bones plot of the Grishaverse; and, the YA universe?

You get this mess.

I rode the book out thinking that it would surprise me, that I wouldn't see where this book was going.

If you have read Shadow and Bone (Grishaverse); Divergent ; and any YA book, you'll know how this book goes.

I'll pass on the rest of the books, thanks.

This is a world divided by blood - red or silver
This is the book that got me out of my reading slump, and I absolutely loved it.

The reds are commoners who are ruled by the silver elite in the possession of powers. Mare Barrow who lives in the Stilts has to steal in order to survive with her family. Her brothers have been sent off to the Choke (the war) because for the Reds if they do not have a job by the time, they turn 18 they get picked up and sent off. This book is filled with adventure, discovery of oneself, captivity, rebellion, love, and betrayal.
I loved the ups and downs that come in this book along with all the many surprises that come with it. You think that the book is going one way until the end and bam you are looking at the pages like "What did I just read?"

Read this through Kindle Unlimited. DNF'd around halfway through. Wasn't feeling it. Not the biggest romance fan, and the love 'arrow'? 'peace sign'? Was frustrating to follow.

One technical aspect that did it in for me: It annoyed me that the author would show you something, but would then immediately tell you - in blank, explicit terms - what they'd just implied. Let's your words do the work!

Red Queen is a dystopian type book due to the class split. There are the reds (lower class, magic less) and the Silver (upper class, have magic).

This is how the world runs and how it's meant to be. Until one day, a red miraculously has powers and the royal family cannot hide the truth from the country this time. The Red is then taken in by the Royal Family and forced thru actions for her survival. She lives in a castle full of enemies and can trust no one.

One of the things I loved about this book was the slow burn romance but also trying to figure out who would betray her or who you couldn't trust. I kept changing between characters. I had to try so hard to not go searching for spoilers because I just HAD to know. Also, who does she end up with for her romance. If you're an SJM reader you totally get the reason why I have no trust in this

I have heard so many positive comments about this book and series. I just finished the audio- great narrator. But predictable. It was fast paced, action, tension and suspense. Hoping for better from the second book.

This was the first book I read coming from a hiatus in reading and it did not disappoint - The story can make you feel the journey Mare had.

🌺 Exquisite journey
