Solid history of Maine. I enjoyed reading this before a trip to learn about the Maine coast. 🦞

Fascinating history of Maine's Coast, and how the demographics have changed over time. This is the 3rd book I've read by Woodard, I find his writing style very engaging.

Each chapter is interesting on its own, and the book is well-written throughout. It lacks thematic consistency, however.

Lots of facts and great insights into the history of Maine, but somewhat dry.

Turns out people from Massachusetts have always been Massholes (sorry Mass. friends!).

Anyway, I originally wanted a book about the history and culture of Maine overall, but apparently people don't really write about Maine as a whole. I decided to focus on its coast, which is HUGE.
I liked the modern-day information presented in this book, which included short snippets with locals that author interacted with. The middle chunk of this book is history from the past few hundred years, which isn't really my favorite thing to read about...so it was kind of a slog to get though for me. But it did give me a better understanding of Maine culture, including why so many people in New England hate Massachusetts/Boston.
Interesting book, but if you don't already have an interest in New England/Maine culture or history, you may not enjoy it.
