I'm not generally a fan of sword and sorcery, but given how short this story is I thought I would give it a go. The plot is very straightforward and the characters are not the deepest. Cursing was occasionally used as a substitute to characterisation. The language can be very stilted at times ("nor ran far ere they fell afoul of a frigate who blew them out of the water", "zounds"). However, I found I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. Helen, the female lead, was entertainingly badass, despite her aforementioned cursing habit. The ending was predictable but pleasing. Not a story with the greatest depth, but enjoyable nonetheless.
