This books honors both the similarities and differences across indigenous cultures on health and wellness, revitalizing traditional perspectives in a modern world. The authors encourage an exploration of the reader’s own family traditions and using the Seven Circles as a framework while warning against cultural appropriation of specific Indigenous practices, which serves to honor the lineages that influenced this framework while respecting their autonomy despite the efforts of settler colonialism. As I read more books by Indigenous authors, I have come to realize how Indigenous ways of knowing are often “proven” right by science later on, and this book explores myriad ways native peoples lived healthfully by learning from the Earth, as well as efforts to return to these teachings. I am moved and inspired to seek health as a journey for my community and the first people who called this place home.
