I don't think I was the target I was the target audience but the book, overall, wasn’t bad. It’s very slow to start and didn’t really pick up till the final third of the novel.

I found it to be a struggle to read as the author chose a subject matter that I didn’t feel like she was capable of fully articulating which made it drag. When discussing major social issues, it’s easy to fall into a rhythm of relying on tropes verses allowing for critical thought and nuance. I could tell she didn’t fully flush things out with the way she moved key plot points forward (I.e. the method of finding the phone). She also abruptly stopped subplots without true ending which felt unfinished.

I’m debating riding the other Novak in this series as it’s appears to rely less on the shock value of interracial violence. I’m hoping that gives me a better idea of the authors ability.
