A gorgeous book, evoking the beauty and strangeness of a deep winter’s night.

December 2020 reading: ★★★★☆ I wanted to read this again after tomte came up in another book I was reading. This time, knowing more about tomte as a Nordic folk figure, I definitely found more pleasure in the story but a little background in the book itself would have helped. Also, I found it strange that the tomte's words are sometimes set differently from the rest of the text and sometimes not- a distracting design issue.

January 2019 reading: ★★★☆☆ The setting and illustrations are charming but what's the point of the story?

One of our all-time favourite kids' books...love the illustrations and the gentle repetitive and poetic language. I would love to find this in the original Swedish.

November 2016 - this is one of my childhood favorites and I was pleased to find it holds up - at least for me. Ben was super distracted while we read it, so we'll have to try again for the full effect. I love that quiet, snow-covered farm and the Tomten's silent language - there's a bit of melancholy to the story, but it's also so peaceful.

En mysig liten julsaga som jag definitivt kommer ja med mig och läsa för mina förskolebarn och förstaklassare när vi närmar och skolavslutningen.
