I picked this up on a whim at a bookstore and didn't realize it's #4 in a series. It's not horribly written (and I'm definitely not one who shies away from starting a series in the middle), but there was too much focus on the mystery and not enough on the characters to really draw me in. Also, it doesn't seem queer enough to hold my interest, so, for now, I'm putting this back on the shelf.

This book started of being kind of meh, because I thought the different plot points were a little disconnected and I didn't really understand what the Faceless Man's plan was (still don't tbh); but the last couple of chapters were so. fucking. good. it blew my rating up to 5 stars (maybe unwarranted, because I really didn't like some parts of the book but I DON'T CARE, I'M JUST SO AMAZED). Ben Aaronovitch just knows how to write plot twists that make you audible gasp.

Spoiler Like, I actually have read this book before (many years ago), but didn't remember shit except for something exploding and something happening to Lesley. And when it came to that chapter, it was like reading it for the first time again. I was so tense and excited and the part where Lesley tasers Peter left me SPEECHLESS. It was spectacular.
