"You can tell a lot about someone by the way they treat animals."
I just love how Clare Mackintosh writes her books. There's always the perpetrator's point of view (so creepy, btw) which she weaves into the story effortlessly. Every time I'm surprised to see how she elegantly unfolds the twist.
This book starts with an accident involving a young boy, Jacob.

SpoilerJenna was heavily abused by Ian. She lost her confidence, was very scared and is trying to start afresh at some remote place.
Ian was her very controlling boyfriend. He liked to be wanted and thinks everything Jenna does and says is with the distinct purpose of playing games with him. The story also shows how small domestic abuse can start. It's usually very easy to say 'why did they stay with the abuser for so long'? And this story answers that question. How a very confident, happy girl can become a traumatised victim of domestic abuse. The title of the book 'I Let You Go' comes back a lot in the story. Jacob's mother and Jenna literally letting go of their children, Ray letting go of his feelings for Kate, and finally Jenna letting go of her anxiety and literally letting go of Ian on that cliff. In contrast, Ian was the one who couldn't let anything go.
Also, after knowing how Ian is, it didn't surprise me that Jacob was his own son and that he knowingly made that accident happen.

The twists were well executed, points taken off bc it was a little too gung-ho about the police. I think the author is a former officer and I don’t care for that perspective too much, but an interesting story. It was also a little graphic
