"mas desejam sepultar os mortos, por cujas mãos deveriam elas ser sepultadas na hora aprazada pelo destino." | "Pois, para os mortais, um único bem existe que, consumido, não mais se recupera: a vida humana"

Had to read this for school. I gave it a 3/5 because it is not the type of book that I usually read but i found it interesting at it definetly makes you think about certain topics.

Again with the freaking out over unburied bodies. Hard to care. On the other hand, it is also again with the anti-war sentiment. Does feature wife jumping onto husband's pyre.

Perhaps I should add I evaluate this particular play for more about 3.5 stars, but gods know I have got used to Euripides' slight farfetchedness.
This one didn't flow smoothly like his best pieces do, the political dimension was too obtrusive, but I still enjoyed and appreciated this piece nevertheless.

i'm still a slut for thebes.
2,500-year-old play is absurdly topical.
theseus justifies military intervention in thebes because they've broken "universal laws" and the liberal democracy of athens can do no wrong.
sassy theban herald says democracy is in thrall to "private profit" and "the worst pestilence of our time / as every sane man knows, is the unscrupulous / upstart whose glib tongue brings him fame and popular power."
lots of crying.
10/10 would supplicate again.
