Such a great series! Whimsical, clever, and downright enjoyable!

I enjoyed this story (really a 3.5 star rating)...the characters were well developed and the plot was interesting. Will definitely read the next in the series.

This is a series of books I picked up a very long time ago when Borders was still a thing. They've been sitting on my shelf and it was sunny outside and I wanted to read - something I can't do in the sun with a tablet. So, I picked up this little gem and read it. I gave it an extra star because there is potential. If this book were twice as long because of character development and world enrichment I would have given it five stars. Since it is the first in a series - and I think a debut book - I don't want to be too harsh. If I were a kid and my parent were reading it to me I would be enchanted. And since I am sure the target audience is little kids it's probably spot-on. There is just so much potential for it to be more, though.

Read with my son. Super entertaining but I was not expecting it to be so dark! Loads of world building and character development, most of the fantasy creatures are dark and don't give a fig about humans - that seems rather new but admittedly it's not my usual genre. Seth is super annoying and it sure seems like the whole book could have been stopped by Seth not being an idiot. That one got old fast.

The book is meant for a YA audience, but the action and tension-dense plot make for a fast-paced tale of adventure amid creatures of fantasy worlds. The story centers around two children, Seth and Kendra, who are dropped off at their grandfather's house while their parents go on a cruise. Seth has more spirit and taste for adventure than he has common sense, but that drives the plot forward :) His sister Kendra tends to think about her actions before committing to them. This trait comes in handy later on in the story, when the fate of her grandfather, as well as that of Fablehaven, rests solely on her shoulders.
