This is a great story about a girl named Sam as she is growing up. The book wasn't that exciting, no major twists and turns, it is just about Sam's life and it's pretty real. I enjoyed it. It was well written and I found myself rooting for Sam.

Really enjoyed this coming of age tale about Sam. This book begins with Sam as a 7-year-old describing adventures with her dad and her boring school routine (having spent a lot of time in elementary school classrooms lately, it felt authentic!). As Sam gets old, we see her talent and skill for climbing grow, but her confidence and sense of security takes one hit after the next. I was eager to see where her journey would take her and loved how the characters and the story developed.

Coming of age novel that follows Sam from 6-19 years old. I really enjoyed the writing and how we saw Sam’s perspective of the world change and widen over time. I loved the rock climbing aspect, and I felt completely immersed in what it’s like to be a climber. I related to Sam in a lot of ways and had a lot of compassion to her as a character. She was just a kid doing her best with the life she had. I love a book that makes me feel all the emotions, good and bad. Overall I was inspired by her story.

This book really got everything right. When Allegra Goodman built this character, Sam, she didn’t go for the obvious or expected. She created a character that, even in childhood, was multidimensional and complicated. In doing this, you sit with Sam while reading this book and feel every twinge of emotion that a less than ideal coming of age experience is. My only complaint is I wish I could read more books in which a character was so well developed. I miss getting to know Sam.

Complex coming of age sorry of Sam. It goes with her through love and loss and growing up. Ends with her going to college. Nothing overly extraordinary about it.
