This book was highly recommended by more than one person, and it was named one of the best books in 2012. I wanted to like it, but I couldn't even force myself to finish it. I quit at Part III. It was a very slow read, and I kept waiting for it to get good, but it never did. I hated Jacob and his father, who acts as the narrator, so I didn't care about the characters. The question of Jacob's guilt or innocence was inconsequential to me.

I didn't enjoy Defending Jacob at all. Andy's constant foreshadowing got irritating; after a while, he needed to just get to the point. Laurie was so inconsistent: she switched between doubting her son's innocence and then defending him at all costs when Andy dared to question him.
The premise of this book was so interesting but the execution left a lot to be desired.

Because this was my first audio book in 20 yrs, I'm not sure that I enjoyed it as much as I would have if I had read it. I know it's highly rated and it was a really good story, but I found the narrator's voice completely annoying. Now I figured out you can sample the book first so you can hear the voice. I just didn't get enough of the boy character - ok, you get none from his point of view. I also wanted more of the mother, but I think the wrap up of the book left me wanting something a little more....not sure what, but again, it probably would have been different if I actually read the words.
