Set in Africa, it’s an adventurous tale about love, family, and bringing magic back to those who were born with the dormant abilities. It’s a race against time as they are hunted down by the king who is dead set on eradicating magic forever.

This book was such a great read. I just fell in love with all the world building that coated the pages. At every point in the book I could imagine myself there in the scenes taking place in the book. My only complaint about this story is the romance. The first official romance didn’t seem as convincing as the side romance. I feel like the romantic feelings weren’t given enough to full develop so that the eventual heartbreak could really be felt by readers. But overall I can’t wait for the movie to finally come out so I can see everything come to life.

Where do I even begin with this one?

For starters I'm really scared to pick up the second book in this triology. Especially  with the last quarter of this book. Though  a lot happened I was not surprised about.

Of cours the world was beautiful. And the descriptions had its  moments  to.

I want to talk about the main characters Zélie and Amari. Because there was both shock and awe of the growth and confidence.  They both aren't perfect  by any means. Each make huge mistakes. But are  just teenagers that have to face  these major obstacles. In very different life  circumstances.  And both do it in a way that is graceful  but rightfully  pissed off.

The world they live in has made them afraid and tough. But also vulnerable because  of fear. Yet by the end I think are prepared  for  whatever  happens  next in the world of Orïsha. Which is sure to be chaos after  the ending in this first book.

My first dip back into YA fantasy since I was young and I could not have chosen a better book! While the pacing can be slow at times, the ending of this story and the various plot twists that I did NOT see coming kept me enveloped in Adeyemi’s world of Orïsha. Overall a great read and I can’t wait to keep going with this series. (PS you don’t want to miss the author’s note at the end!)
