Happily Surprised

I loved this book. it is one of the best romantic horror books I've read in a long time. I've never read a book where there were no good guys and the bad guys were likeable. I loved it.

This book was a trip! I wasn't sure what exactly I was going to get going into this, but I loved it!

A couple of quick notes I want to make before getting into the book: (1) I appreciated that the author points out a very specific trigger warning that might be too much for some and lets you know exactly how to avoid it in the book; and (2) the author begs her family, especially her mom, not to read this book and says that if they do read it to never ever mention it. LOL. I thought it was hilarious bc I would feel the same. OK, on to the review.

I'm always a bit hesitant to read books that reimagine fairy tales, but WOW it really worked for me here. This is a very dark take (mind those TWs!) on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Here, we have Snoe Whyte and seven demon wolves. The world that Snoe lives in is really interesting. Witches are mostly in power, but there are also vampires, shifters and lowly humans.

The book starts out at the funeral for Snoe's father. His mother passed when he was younger and he has had to live with his stepmother and her two kids. Needless to say, they are not very nice to Snoe and basically push him out of the family home.

Snoe is just trying to do his own thing in the forest, but that still isn't good enough for good ole stepmom because Snoe is still the heir to his family's coven and her magic mirror tells her that he is more worthy.

“Someone else is more worthy of the position.” The mirror laughed, a deep menacing laugh that made Hilde’s stomach drop with dread. “The one they call Snoe will be the end to you and yours.”

Snoe's stepmother sends shifters from the renowned Huntsman pack to kill Snoe. He barely survives thanks to making a deal with a demon lord to save his life.

Snoe wanted revenge, craved it even. And the only way he was going to get it was with a demon’s help. He was willing to pay any price, including with his body.

All Snoe wants to do is take revenge on everyone who has wronged him and now he has seven deadly demon wolves at his side. The wolves effortlessly change from wolf to human and they are magnificent, hot AF and deadly.

Snoe just lay in their arms as they did what they wanted to his body. “We’ve always craved a master,” the leader whispered into Snoe’s ear as he groaned loudly and thrust harder into Snoe.

This book included my first MMMMMMMM (yes, there are 8 Ms there!) scenes and I was so here for them. OMFG. The sex scenes in this book are so filthy and scorching hot. Snoe wins the loyalty of the demon wolves through a very spicy game that they play.

“I don’t mind following you.” He dragged his thumb over Snoe’s bottom lip. “As long as I get to take part in your body.”

With the help of his devoted wolves Snoe starts plotting the ultimate payback. This book is not for the faint of heart. Things get quite bloody and there is a lot of murder going on, but it is oh so satisfying to see Snoe take his revenge against all of those who have done him wrong.

Snoe wanted revenge like it was his next breath. Guilt was an emotion Snoe thought he couldn’t feel anymore. What did that say about him? Was he becoming more of a monster? Was it worth it? Yes.

“You play with fire,” [the demon lord] said. Snoe shrugged. “What can I say? I enjoy being warm.”

Hmmmm...I hate to give books low stars. But this one was not a winner for me, to be honest I almost did not want to finish it, which is rare for me. Sometimes books say "dark" and they don't really mean it. Boy, this one sure did. It is a very dark retelling of Snow White. It is not for the feint of heart. I don't find myself typically shying away from darker themed books, but I at least like being able to relate to one of the MC's in some way. I guess I expected the snow white of this book to be more like the typical snow white (sweet, soft, nurturing, good) and the story itself to have the darker themes. The character is not what I was expecting at all. So if you like dark books, dark characters with questionable morals, gore and lots of killing...this book is for you! Enjoy! I am now going to find myself a palate cleanser!
