This was a lot of fun. I loved the way Penelope brought the black community of 1920s Washington to life, and made you feel totally enriched in the colour and music of the time. I also love the way she discussed the judgement from within the black community and how it plays into what racism wants. I also love the discussion of magic, and the different haints, spirits and ghosts and how it all ties into the world.
I really liked Clara as a protag and I really liked her connection to her ghost grandmother, and how she kinda drawn to two very different worlds. I also loved her relationship with all of the crew members. I also really liked all our crew members especially Aristotle and Israel, Aristotle being my fav, however Hawk and Zella were also fantastic.
Overall a fantastic little spooky standalone !

It’s got history, it’s got great characters, it’s  got supernatural, it’s got great prose. Best book of the year
