This is incredibly dull so far. 150 pages in, and I seriously can't handle more than five pages at a time.

This was an interesting read. In a lot of ways it reminded me of some of the early Stephen King stuff that I read as a teenager. I like Neil Gaiman's children/teen stuff, and this was my first read of any of his "grownup" literature. I would say that on the whole I enjoy his stuff for younger audiences (Coraline, The Graveyard Book) better.

2nd Read: After reading much more of Neil Gaiman, I find that I understand him better, and I liked this book much better the second time. I love the small town murder mystery buried within the larger story, and the unlikely friendships made along the way.

"People believe. It's what people do. They believe, and then they do not take responsibility for their beliefs; they conjure things, and do not trust the conjuration. People populate the darkness; with ghosts, with gods, with electrons, with tales. People imagine, and people believe; and it is that rock solid belief, that makes things happen."

Neil Gaiman has done it again! Every time I forget how much I enjoy his writing, and then I pick up one of his books and am instantly transported into these quirky, nonsensical worlds with an assortment of colourful and enjoyable characters. I’ve had this book on my shelf for years (we’re talking 5+ years) but I’m actually glad I waited to read it because I think if I had attempted reading it five years ago, a lot of it would have gone right over my head. I read it at the right time for me, and it was incredibly. Highly recommend for any fantasy lover.
