This was a difficult read. I realize it was written in the fifties, and different language was used then, but there is just a lot of problematic themes, language, stereotypes.

Standard Bond book, seventy years haven’t been kind to this one with much of it now deeply offensive and racist but the story still stands as a good old fashioned spy tale.

Bond is not as arrogant as in the films. Surprisingly, he has feelings, he is scared, he spends time thinking about his mission. Fleming is capable of painting a picture of a very careful man with a keenly strategic mind. The descriptions in the last few chapters are so well done and vivid that I think I won’t ever step into the Caribbean sea.

James Bond goes to the US in the 50s and wait for it he’s racist! The story itself tries to be more exotic by setting the main events in Harlem and Florida, but of course it’s clumsy at best. Maybe skip this one if you would rather not hear the n word like a billion times (obviously it makes sense for the time but I think we can all agree Ian Fleming was never one for nuance so his stereotypes can easily come off as offensive even though that wasn’t the intention)
