It's an exciting story that very much fulfils what I think of when I think of Bond - guns, villains, women, martini etc. Although I preferred it to Casino Royale, I did feel very uncomfortable with the level of racism and sexism. I just don't feel they have aged well, so I think sadly this will be my last Bond read (from Fleming anyway). The narration worked very well though.

This was a difficult read. I realize it was written in the fifties, and different language was used then, but there is just a lot of problematic themes, language, stereotypes.

Bond is not as arrogant as in the films. Surprisingly, he has feelings, he is scared, he spends time thinking about his mission. Fleming is capable of painting a picture of a very careful man with a keenly strategic mind. The descriptions in the last few chapters are so well done and vivid that I think I won’t ever step into the Caribbean sea.
