This is one of the best books I have read this year, and frankly, in a while. Guanzon has incredible talent as a writer. In a plot that spans only a day, he sets up Henry as a well-meaning yet deeply flawed father restrained by the evils of capitalism. It's his son's birthday and he wants to do everything for him, but living out of his truck, he can only do so much. The day rapidly deteriorates as Guanzon flashes back to the past to show readers how Henry and his son got to this brutally desperate point. Each chapter is a dollar amount to track how life in a capitalist society is often defined by the money in one's bank account which for Henry was sometimes $0. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Guanzon is an amazing writer.
