I only finished this book because of the sunk cost fallacy, which is a fallacy, so I should have stopped, but I was holding out hope that maybe the book would cohere into something informative or introspective or compelling or analytical, but it didn't. Sometimes it felt impossible to tell whether the writer was as infatuated with psychedelics as his characters or resented them so much that his idea of successful criticism was ham-handed satire.

This novel is not exactly a bad trip, but definitely not a peak experience, either.

I expected to like this a lot, maybe that is why it left me feeling so frustrated.
There were some entertaining and interesting parts (and it really was fun to essentially read fan fiction about characters I have encountered during my studies), but the plot is so unnecessarily slow and repetitive that I did not care for any of the characters and found it difficult to find the motivation to keep reading. Half way through, I gave up on trying to find it.
