Not quite as strong a novel in its own right as The Gunslinger, but an important step in the long journey that is The Dark Tower. I'm hoping one of the longer tomes in this series can capture the lightning that is the first book in the series.

I read this second volume in the Dark Tower series differently this time through. Reading the afterward for the first time that King wrote in 1986, it is clear that The Drawing of the Three is now a part of a much larger and more expansive saga, as King mentions the next two volumes which had yet to be published. I think you can read The Gunslinger as a stand alone because when it was written, the author published it with a very small press because it was unlike anything he had written up to that point, and was probably unsure if he would see his vision for the Dark Tower through at that point. The Drawing of the Three is full speed ahead and features some great writing involving Roland entering our world at three different points in time. Along the way our Gunslinger meets up with two characters who will become central to the larger story. Their story as it intersects with Roland's as he recovers from his injuries, propel the novel forward into yet more new territory for Stephen King.

I really liked this book, quite different to the first one but in a good way. I think the characters are very interesting and sets up the relationships and main cast of characters more-so than in the first book.

One thing that I found slightly annoying is how quickly some of the characters fall in love with one another. Although that is quite a common theme within King's book and its to do with their 'ka' or something, I just found it a little strange how they would just meet each other and the characters would be like, 'yep, I am totally in love with and committed to this person.'

On the whole though very good book, very fast paced action throughout which was a nice change to the first. Very cool how they mix the world of the story with the real world and the interactions between the two. I'm very keen to continue this series and see where it goes.

Really enjoying the series now, this book seems to have fleshed out the theme and feel a lot more. Liking the characters and looking forward to the rest of the series. Gunslinger in perspective seems almost more like a primer (not even a full prequel...)
