Schmucks like to sugar coat history to absolve themselves from their schmuckery and the schmuckery of their forefathers. Non-schmucks tell it like it was.

The content of the book was very interesting. I learned new facts and was offered a new perspective on old truths. Well worth a read.
That said, I feel the need to mention something that annoyed me through the whole book. I listened to this book, narrated by the author, so it may have been an issue with how the text was read, but I could not stand all the descriptive sections. Whether the descriptions were of people or places or birds dancing in the air I would just to tighten my jaw and count seconds until it was over. No clue why this annoyed me so much, but I would have loved the book more if those sections were omitted entirely or replaced with more factual information.
I do intend to scour the sources listed in the end for more stuff to read. Proud as I was having already read some of the mentioned sources there are plenty more to check out.

Read for my Intro to American Studies Course. I couldn't finish it during the semester, so I'm catching up during break
Though not written by a historian I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in history, or even just the study of history.
