A lot of set up involved in this one. What a journey though! Again stayed up until 3am to reach the climax.
I could see the entire plot unfold as soon as Cassie went undercover:
1. Daniel was going to burn her
2. Someone was going to die in the end
3. There was going to be intimacy involved and was mildly surprised Daniel and 'Lexie' stopped at just a kiss

Other thoughts:
- Thought the killer would eventually be an outsider but if that was the case, the entire set up would have been unjustified. And it was fun trying to pinpoint who exactly was the killer among the four.
- Loved Frank Mackey and his character - easily a favourite character to back, which means of course I'm going to read the next book in this series.
- There were some bits where I was genuinely afraid that Cassie was going to be burned when she got drunk because she had decided she wanted to let loose. But hey, that's good writing and character development!

Had me gripped! Let's put it this way, I was visiting Chengde, China, and was seriously annoyed I had to go out and look at temples, rather than staying in to read!

4.5 stars.
Although the second in a series, I didn't feel lost starting with this one. Loved the complexity in the story, particularly in regards to the psychological aspects of what it would take to enter into and live someone else's life. Thrillers are often too much for my sensitivities, but this was thrilling without being too creepy. Warning: quite a bit of profanity.

So disappointing. I liked the first book in this series, and I heard rave reviews about this one so I thought I'd give it a shot. I tend to be like Goldilocks when it comes to mysteries/thrillers: I don't want it to be only plot-driven with no character development (I've read too many books about the tough-as-nails cop with a heart of gold who solves the mystery with the help of a young assistant whom he inevitably sleeps with. *eye-roll*). I don't need it to be true literary fiction because I want page-turning action, but I want good writing with relatable characters. This book started out feeling just right. I was even willing to suspend disbelief (and the author requires a LOT of "willing suspension of disbelief" to set up the story) and let myself just roll with the story. So far, so good.

But that heart-pounding, can't-put-it-down suspense never happened. I don't want to give any spoilers, but the actual mystery wasn't exactly a mystery. And the writing needed *serious* editing. There were points where I started to skim the page because it was so bogged down. Mystery/thrillers should be page-turners, not page-skimmers.

Cassie is sent undercover when a dead girl shows up with her face and using her old undercover ID. But can she catch the killer before it’s too late?!
