There’s something to be said about a swashbuckling seafaring adventure that just grabs my attention every time. This book meets those expectations.

Kit Brightling is a fantastic lead character with all the inner strength one could ask for and a firm sense of justice and loyalty to boot. Colonel Rian Grant acts as her foil, much more polished and stoic but with an immeasurable depth that you can’t help but want to learn more about. I, quite unashamedly, ship their relationship, and appreciate the fact that there was buildup to their first kiss and a sense of more to come. Hetta and the rest of the Brightling family clearly are more than meets the eye and I cannot wait to learn a little more about them as this series progresses.

I will say that I wish the story was longer, and that more time was invested to adding more introspective outlooks in Kit, because I was longing for a more in depth character study of her nature and how she grew up to be the woman she is currently. But hopefully with the sequels we’ll get to see more sides of her that will make her a more balanced and fully fleshed entity.

Do I wish there was slightly more pirates? Yeah, I do.

But I will gladly take what has been offered and am gleefully waiting in anticipation for the next instalment.
