This book is part of the Wounded Hero series and the main characters are Jonah and Mabel. Jonah was injured overseas while serving in the Marines and lost two of his colleagues and saved the life of another. He blames himself for the losses and hates that everybody calls him a hero. He definitely doesn’t see himself as one! Once out of hospital, for his shoulder injury, he ends up staying with his cousin Ledger and his wife Tilly, who is pregnant. He has no idea what he is going to do with his life now, nor where he wants to live. He certainly doesn’t want to crash with his cousin and cramp their space once the baby arrives. Ledger and Tilly invite a load of their friends round to welcome him back stateside and to their small town of Fallen Peak. It is all a bit much for him, but some of the others also served and one of them suggests he cut out and go for a walk after dinner, if it gets too much for him. He follows this advice later on and comes to the road near the house to find a woman swearing at her car, which is smoking. She is a bit shocked and worried about being out there alone, with a huge stranger suddenly upon her. She’s comparing her situation to what you see in all the worst horror films! She completely stops worrying that he might be there to kill her, when something furry runs across her feet in the dark, she jumps up on him, scared of whatever that was rather than him!
Jonah drives her home, the long way by her directions, then goes back the next morning and fixes a few of the issues with her car, and drops it off at her apartment. He is her hero for doing all of that, not that he accepts that term, so she nicknames him Charming instead! He gets enough gumption together to ask her out and they go to an Italian restaurant in town. But before he can even get to the doo of the restaurant, people are wanting to shake his hand and are calling him a hero. Mabel interrupts and pulls him away, telling him she has a better idea and they go for a picnic in the dark. Shame she is also new to town, and has no idea where she is directing him to! Mabel has a job at the local salon as a hair stylist, but isn’t sure if that is what she really wants to be, as she loves children and could have been a teacher. She always wanted to live in a small town and that is why she chose Fallen Peak. It is a call from the man he saved, Marco Reyes, that finally gives him an insight into what he might be able to do for a living now. Jonah feels he can’t get any more serious with Mabel until he can tell her about what happened and what he did, for everyone to call him a hero. Everyone can see he loves her, even if they have only known each other for a short time! A quiet and reluctant hero manages to find his perfect other half, who talks through all his quiet moments and is outgoing and funny, who makes him feel like a hero, for her! Definitely a steamy read as the two end up jumping into each other’s arms and beds, but also touching as an accidental hero has to come to realise he is not to blame for what happened and to recognise his role in the event was heroic and that he actually saved a life! Romance, steam, a new start and new career. Another lovely story about a wounded hero and the sacrifice of veterans, seen or unseen. I look forward to reading many more of their stories. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

I received this as an arc from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving my honest review.

This was a fantastic wounded hero romance. I loved returning to Fallen Peak, my first time reading a Shaw Hart book was a story set in Fallen Peak and it was what got me hooked on her writing. Jonah was such a great hero, I love when a character has flaws or wounds because it makes them seem real, and Jonah was so real to me. He has this amazing chemistry with Mabel and I loved their meet cute. This was just a fantastic story and I’m so excited to see that more stories are coming from Fallen Peak.

Loved coming back to visit Fallen Peak.
Jonah was great, loved meeting him and how he cared for Mabel.
Mabel was a hot mess of sweetness and together they made a great couple.
Can't wait for more from Fallen Peak residents!
