Hard to narrow down what I thought and trying to be fair but I guess the three stars is representative as I read this book every chance i got but to be honest it was a mess. I wont be reading books 2 and 3 as it was just all over the place. I liked the character Amy but cared little for anyone else and the sudden leaps of decades taking the story on didn't work for me.

Loved it! I had watched the tv show before I knew it was a book. But luckily the entire show covered only the first quarter of the book. The story changed between characters, narration style, and points in time which kept the book interesting despite its length. Post-apocalyptic stories are my jam and vampire series are my guilty pleasure, making The Passage a hit for me.

Loved the beginning and the end. Most of the middle was boring to me, thus hard to follow. WAY too many characters. This should have been three books. It's difficult to switch from group to group of characters and not lose interest. Now that I started I'll finish the trilogy though.

I have been reading THE PASSAGE for 2.5 weeks, so part of me is in shock right now, because I can't quite believe it is finished, but also that ending was super intense.

I had a few up and down moments with this book - possibly because of the time it took to actually get some reading done - but overall I thought it was fantastic. I resisted the idea of reading it, because I knew there was a twisted vampire element involved ( and now that I've read it, I know it is way more complex than I could have imagined) but I was under the impression that it was going to fall in a heavy horror category. When I finally committed to starting, I was sure I'd only be able to read it during the day. Although there was some gore, a bit of twisted/creepy thinking and A LOT of action, none of it was particularly horror-like.

The last 300 pages moved so swiftly, I'm glad I had a completely empty day to sit back and read in one big hit.

Looking forward to jumping into the rest of the series this year.

This book was unoriginal, and not particularly interesting. It's basically a mashup of The Stand and Watership Down. I probably won't bother reading the next book in the series

This was a fantastic read. Don't be turned off by the word vampire! It's really unlike any vampire story I've ever read.

The storytelling is so fleshed out! If you like books you can submerse yourself in and love knowing every detail, this book is for you. Even scenes where a dog got a bath felt totally vital to the storytelling. If you like full character development, this book is for you.

My only qualms with this book are:
1. I wanted it to be longer!!
2. Some of the twists made me very sad-necessary, I know. But *sniff*.
3. Some of the plot lines felt unfinished. Hopefully some of the holes will be covered in subsequent books.

If you like The Stand or The Dark Tower series, you should check this out!

This book was such a letdown. I was drawn to the post-apocalypse, virus-based story but the execution is pretty bad.
There's some good stuff in the book, the vampire-based virus was interesting and one of the best bits was a setpiece in Las Vegas involving empty streets, darkness, and approching danger, but the good just got swallowed up by the bad.
The opening section is over 200 pages...200+ pages of build-up and following a group of characters and their lives, and then we're taken abruptly to 90 years later and a whole new load of characters. I struggled with names, locations, relationships, and the worst thing was that I didn't really care about most of them. The main character, Amy, who is heralded and special and one-to-watch right from the first line, disappears for hundreds of pages, and then shows up as a mute mystery. I found this incredibly frustrating as I was wading through pages and pages of soap-opera drama from the other people just so I could get to the point where Amy re-surfaces.
I had some nit-picking issues with language too. The use of "flyers" as some sort of exclamation/expletive was so dumb. It doesn't work as either and made me roll my eyes everytime it was said. The other one was calling children "Littles". I didn't get that one. I know language can evolve quickly but it seemed like such a weird word to change, especially when much of their English was the same as today.
Overall, a disappointment.
