This was more of a concept than a story. The first six chapters introduced six new characters. Each character had ambiguous motives that were only slightly revealed. I did not care about any of them. The pacing was far too quick to feel any of the tension that the author was attempting. Overall, I strongly disliked this book.

1st - 3 stars. This book has a great concept (hippos!) and great characters, but the plot is lacking. It's a caper/heist type plot where one character assembles a crew to perform a task. However, some characters seem superfluous and it's never explained how they fit into the plan. I'm not even sure what the original plan was and how much was changed by the obstacles they run into. It ends on cliffhanger and there's a sequel. I'm still debating whether to keep reading the series.

2nd - 3.5 stars. Decided in order to read the sequel, I needed to reread. I think I understand the heist part better (still don't really understand why anyone except Hero was needed - I mean, the book has an explanation but it didn't make much sense), but the dam breaking part makes no sense, the dam should be on the downstream side of the lake, not the upstream. That's not how dams work. This one is hard to rate - such an interesting concept and characters, but the plot still seems lacking.

All the western fun and heist hijinks of Firefly, but set in the South with hippos! This is SO MUCH FUN and very queer and I can’t wait to see how the second novella ties the story up. This would make such a fun and bonkers miniseries!
