This book is weird. Ann Rice is very talented, of course, but also maybe crazy?? I can't believe I raced through this 1,000+ page book--even with all the taboo subjects, disturbing images, and parts that don't age well--but it really was a well-constructed story; very spooky, memorable and rich. For readers: definitely read the TWs!
Graphic: Adult/minor relationship, Body horror, Incest, Rape, Medical trauma, Abortion, and Pregnancy
Moderate: Alcoholism and Slavery
Minor: Homophobia

Truly loved this book, even if Lasher does turn out to be a faerie.

Ugh. I did my best, but there are over 50 pages just talking about a character. A rather unlikable character, at that.
We get it - he likes houses. Interspersed, though, we get this musing from him: “Did not the cinematic monsters of this time bear a remarkable resemblance to the children being aborted every day in the nation’s clinics?”
I enjoyed the gothic storytelling in her vampire books, but life is too short to keep slogging through this. Was Rice getting paid by the word?
