It was plenty creepy and full of body horror. But as soon as the first character said “Ftaghn”, I was out. Ok I finished it, but I didn’t really like it.

Awesome art though

Very mixed on the plotting, character development, and artwork, which isn't usually a thing with Bunn's prior projects that I've read.

The story started out with a really intriguing premise. However, instead of leading up to a finale that kept the pace, it fell flat. The character's actions at the end weren't justified enough to be interesting, and any "shock" factor that it was going for ultimately didn't pan out.

This book is disgustingly visceral and dark. A disease causing mass disfigurement is raging through towns in Mexico and some doctors are sent to investigate. Along with some military folks, they go into a cavern where some animals featuring similar properties have been found. Things get super gross and weird from there. The art is very effective, but any character development is very loose and not that deep. It definitely plays into the Lovecraftian horror elements and I couldn't quite tear my eyes away, but I also couldn't exactly explain what happened at the end.

First off, I appreciate a character key and recap for comics. I read several series at a time, and it can be hard to keep track of everything when you have to wait a month or longer between issues. Unearth has a very organized recap on the first page, which is excellent!

In the “6 months ago” storyline, Henry is still crazy. He’s probably pretty involved with this whole mess happening in the first place. Frankie is doping while trying to run from the haunting of Amelia. She has made a friend with Isaac, who wants to explore the caves to see his parents again, and Frankie tags along with him.

In the “Now” storyline, Kul sees zombie ghosts that remind him of the dark decisions he has made. Nails is fighting creatures and noting their changed behaviours. Kul is planning a big attack on the beast in the sky, and I’m sure it will be enthralling. Elsewhere, we see “King” sitting atop a throne, looking bored.

This issue was okay for me. The jumping around with the timeline was hard to keep track of at points, but I love the art and think that both plotlines are fascinating.

Unearth follows a scientific task force assigned to investigate a flesh warping disease that has ravaged a remote village in Mexico.

This was a total cover grab and I’d love to display it on a wall but it missed the mark for me story wise. Unearth had a solid story chronologically but I didn’t really care for any of the characters and it would’ve been better as a movie to me. The artwork was really colourful but the cover was the best shot personally.

Unearth will just be a nice piece of art because I don’t really care what happens next. And sometimes it just be like that, 2✨.
