Innsmouth's full of unsettling Cthulhu Mythos world-building that encapsulates the uncanny cosmic horror and suspense you'd expect from Lovecraft.

While it is a classic for a reason, the prose leaves much to be desired for the modern reader. Many of the twists of this book have since become tropes, and the way of storytelling in which the main character is telling the story to the reader robs the reader of true suspense, as the main character’s survival is certain by the merit of them being able to tell it. Still, recommend for those interested in the genre. Also - not recommended for those that are affected by racism both in passing and blatant.

Alright!!! I did not see that one coming at all! The ending and the surprise. Well done. I love how most of H.P.'s stories are connected. Very enjoyable.

My first introduction to Lovecraft. I'd say this is pretty solid as far as invoking a sense of dread, although I would have liked more to happen than the pov character having an inexplicable general sense of creepiness from everything for most of the book.

Am I going insane or was the writing in this one kind of bad? I saw several reviews lauding the "monologue" of Zadok Marsh near the end as he told the story of Innsmouth. It was kind of lost on me because that was the THIRD TIME in this novella that Lovecraft decided to present the protagonist and the reader with a 3-5 page wall of text full of exposition. To me, it was clunky and could have had more nuance.

Sorry to be a hater BUT I did really enjoy the ending!! And that one action scene.
