I read this to my 5th graders for our historical fiction unit. They liked it well enough. It was a harder book to read aloud sometimes due to the book being written in verse and some incredibly long sentences. But I read it myself as a 5th graders and was happy to pass on some of those first experiences with a sad book (lol). My class had really great and animated discussions while reading this together.

This book is an emotional journey through the Dust Bowl era in the Oklahoma panhandle area (Between 1934-1935). I found the book to be very emotional and informative. That being said, I did not really connect with the style of writing (it was written from the main character's point of view in journal format.). I don't know if it was the journal style or the reader of the audiobook, but I did not really connect with the character that much. Even so, my heart went out to the people of that era, dust everywhere, no crops, very little water...I can't even imagine how I would deal. Overall it was a good book, I just didn't connect with the main character.
